SLUM CLEARANCE
(a) 1961/65 SLUM CLEARANCE PROGRAMME
Slum clearance orders covering
14, 15 Sebastian Street,
21, 22, 23 Sebastian Street,
161, 163, Goswell Road,
24, 26 Norman's Buildings.
were confirmed by the Minister of Housing and Local Government.
This left 17, 18 Meredith Street and 39 Whiskin Street outstanding from the
London Borough of Islington's share of this Programme. This area was represented
last year and deferred. A further report was submitted in June and the area was
declared as a Slum Clearance Area in July. The Minister of Housing and Local
Government's confirmation is awaited.
(b) 1966 70 SLUM CLEARANCE PROGRAMME
It was reported last year that at the end of 1967 there were eight small and
one medium sized slum clearance areas outstanding. During 1968 progress was made as
follows:-
1. Elliotts Place - three dwellings represented and declared as a Slum Clearance
area. The Minister of Housing and Local Government's confirmation is awaited.
2. Lorenzo Street. This area was deleted from this Slum Clearance Programme,
after report to the Housing Committee, as the condition of these houses had
improved considerably.
3. Attneave Street - these three houses are already in the ownership of the
Borough Council and a report was sent to the Housing Manager advising that
they were ripe for demolition. One house was already vacant.
(c) FURTHER SLUM CLEARANCE PROGRAMMES
The process of checking properties which appeared likely to warrant inclusion
in the next programme continued. At the year end there were some four hundred properties
listed which in the opinion of the Public Health Inspectors should be
included.
It is still not known whether the Greater London Council will continue its
operations in the Slum Clearance field after 1970. While the completion of the
Greater London Council's work in respect of current and previous agreed programmes
is anticipated, there are advantages in future programmes being dealt with solely
by the London Borough of Islington, although help with rehousing by the G.L.C. would continue
to be essential.
HOUSING ACT 1957 - PART V
Twelve areas of houses, which were proposed as Housing Development Areas,
were inspected by the Public Health Inspectors to ascertain the condition of the
property, the occupancy and the Standard of Amenities.
HOUSING ACT 1957 - SECTION 170
