MATERNAL MORTALITY
In a total of 4,971 live and still births, there were four maternal deaths. Two were
due to abortion, one to post partum haemorrhage and one to spontaneous rupture of uterus
due to cervical constriction ring.
RESPIRATORY TUBERCULOSIS
The death rate for lung tuberculosis in 1968 was 0.09 per 1,000 population, and does nol
compare unfavourably with previous years.
DEATHS DUE TO PNEUMONIA AND BRONCHITIS
In 1968 there were 175 deaths ascribed to bronchitis, and 240 to pneumonia. These
figures were more than those for 1967, which were 133 and 210 respectively.
MALIGNANT GROWTHS OF LUNG AND BRONCHUS
I reported last year that lung cancer deaths in males which showed a steep increase of
20% from 155 to 186 in 1966 was, fortunately, not continued in 1967 when 158 males died from
this disease. A further fall to 145 was recorded in 1968.
Female deaths from this cause which showed a rise from twenty-eight in 1966 to thirtyfive
in 1967, fell in 1968 to 28.
CORONARY DISEASE WITH ANGINA
There were 539 deaths (332 male and 207 female) from this cause in 1968. This shows a
considerable rise after falls from the 1965, 1966 and 1967 figures of 522, 503 and 438
respectively.
