Tuberculosis Care Committee
The London County Council is responsible for care and after care work under
Section 28 of the National Health Service Act, 1946, but the Islington Tuberculosis
Care Committee remains in being, working in conjunction with the Islington Chest
Clinic, and Members of the Borough Council and the Medical Officer of Health serve on
this Committee. The Tuberculosis Care Committee is able to assist patients in many
ways, including the provision of extra nourishment, while loans of beds, bedding and
medical appliances were made to 3 patients from the L, C. C, loan stock, others were
referred to various organisations for assistance.
The Care Committee administers an occupational therapy service with occupational
therapists employed by the L.C.C. The following figures show the service being
provided in a typical week:
No. of sessions of instructions in homes during a week 20
No. of patients receiving instruction at home 50
Scabies and Vermin
As will be seen from the following table there are still a considerable number
of Scabies and also vermin infestations. In fact, there was quite a steep rise in the
numbers treated for scabies in 1963 - 369 compared with 161 the previous year, There
was rather more than twice the number of children under 5, nearly three times the
number of schoolchildren and twice the number of adults who were treated. The numbers
treated for vermin infestations, however, were at 239 rather fewer than the previous
year's total of 273
These conditions continue to be dealt with at the Council's Treatment Centre and
are of course closely related to personal hygiene.
Washing, apart from the use of the kitchen sink. This, combined with the high proportion of congested family accommodation in the Borough, makes the attainment of a reasonable standard of hygiene much more difficult than it need be.
