Acute Poliomyelitis
For the first time on record in the public health history of Islington, there was
not a single case of poliomyelitis either reported or confirmed in 1963. This
situation, of course, might have been anticipated following the dramatic fall in the
poliomyelitis cases over the past few years in particular It is very apparent that
it is the successful campaign for inoculation against poliomyelitis, first through the
medium of the Salk Vaccine given by injection and more recently, by the Sabin Vaccine
given orally, that this successful and most important outcome has resulted Continued
immunisation will be necessary to maintain public protection against poliomyelitis
During the year discussions took place between the Divisional Medical Officer,
the Medical Officer of Health, on co-operative procedure to be taken in the event of
the occurrence of a case of poliomyelitis, Immediate steps would be taken to ensure
general local immunisation using the oral vaccine, and the public health department
staff in such an event would work closely with the London County Council staff in
arranging to give appropriate publicity to the necessary measures and to assist with
domiciliary visiting.
