Age Cause of death
37 Meningitis (Friedlander). Associated with infected abortion. (Open
Verdict).
32 Afibrinogenaemia following upon full term parturition.
37 Infected abortion (C1. Welchii) due to injection of fluid into genital
passages. Self-induced abortion.
38 Haemorrhage from placenta praevia (28 weeks pregnancy).
Respiratory Tuberculosis
The accelerated downward trend in deaths due to tuberculosis of the lungs noted in
my previous annual report, was not continued this year, when the rate rose from .05 per
thousand population to 0.10 per thousand, which was the same as 1959. However, the rate
is still a comparatively low one and should be considered in conjunction with a slight fall
in new cases for this year, which is commented upon elsewhere in this report.
Malignant Growths of Lung and Bronchus
The number of deaths in males from this cause was less than in 1960 as shown in the
table. This is the first occasion since 1955 when there has been a break in the regular
year-by-year increase in the deaths in men caused by malignant disease of the lungs. Whether
a peak has been reached, or whether the 1061 figures are only a fortuitous tei rorarj brep.lc
and nothing more, only future returns can show. In contrast with the change in male deaths,
it has unfortunately also to be recorded that the number of female deaths due to the same
cause in 1961 was the highest yet, although the total female deaths is still only a relatively
small proportion tf the total male deaths due to lung cancer. With regard to the ages at
which death occurs, it is still a fact that approximately 60 per cent, of the male deaths
from lung cancer have occurred below the age of 65 years.
