Another newly-formed lunch club for the elderly received for the first time
the benefit of a Council grant during the year. This was the Caxton House lunch
club, Andover Road, N 7, where meals are served at a reduced price each Friday.
These are supplied by the N A L G 0 Town Hall Canteen, and are delivered in bulk
by the Islington Old People's Welfare Council Meals on Wheels Van which also conveys
(again in bulk) meals from the Canteen to the Gifford Hall Mission Welcome Club.
The lunch club here is also grant-aided by the Council and operates on Tuesday and
Friday each week.
Thanks are due to the voluntary workers at all Centres who assist in serving
meals and washing up etc. and an appreciation is also recorded of the work undertaken
by the numerous unpaid workers who regularly help in the delivery of meals on
wheels. More volunteers for this task would be welcomed.
Holidays for Elderly Persons
By means of a scheme administered through the Old People's Welfare Council
516 persons were able to enjoy a holiday by the sea, or in the country at greatly
reduced cost, where their circumstances were such that it would not have been
possible for them to take a holiday at their own expense. A substantial grant was
provided by the Borough Council for this scheme
