In accordance with Section 54 of the Factories Act, 1937, the quinquennial
inspection of basement bakehouses commenced on 1st July. The number of such
bakehouses is gradually decreasing and details of existing basement bakehouses
appear on page 48.
Complaints were again received during the summer of heavy infestation of
red clover mite on the Council's Housing Estates. These mites travel from the
lawns and trees on the Estates to the interior of the lower flats and whilst
apparently not injurious can be a real source of nuisance to the tenants. As
the Pest Infestation Branch of D. s.I. R. , Slough, are interested in the subject,
Dr. Parkin of this Branch attended personally and arranged for equipment to be
sent from Slough to demonstrate the treatment necessary. Thanks are due to
Dr. Parkin and to his assistant for the interest shown and advice given.
It is considered that more control should be exercised over licensed and
unlicensed clubs, some of which are poorly appointed or situated Of the 23
licensed clubs in the Borough, 19 were inspected. Without a survey of the
Borough, however, it is not possible to ascertain the number of unlicensed clubs.
Following an approach made by the Head of the Department of Technology,
Tottenham-Technical College the Council approved two Inspectors giving lectures
and demonstrations to students during the year. The first gave lectures on
basement bakehouses and smoke abatement respectively, and the second gave
demonstrations in meat inspection.
The Council was represented at the Conference of the Association of Public
Health Inspectors by Alderman A.J. Rogers and the Chief Public Health Inspector.
The shortage of Public Health Inspectors continues and the work proceeds
with difficulty. During the year, however four trainees qualified and were
appointed on the Public Health Inspectors' establishment.
