During a night duty carried out by two Inspectors observations were kept at
22 retail milk premises when it was found that supplies of milk had been delivered
between 1.0 and 5.30 a.m. In each case the milk had been left on the public
highway, which practice contravenes Regulation 30(a) of the Milk and Dairies
Regulations, 1949. Each of the distributors were communicated with, as well as
the four suppliers concerned. It is hoped that alternative arrangements may be
made in order to secure compliance with the Regulation concerned.
Complaints were received in respect of alleged :—
Foreign matter in bottles of milk.
Foreign matter in sausage roll.
Foreign matter in loaves of bread.
Foreign matter in rice.
Foreign matter in bun.
Foreign matter in jar of marmalade.
Foreign matter in tin of apricots.
Foreign matter in chocolate eclair.
Dirty milk bottle.
Dirty bottle of orange drink.
Glass in bottle of milk.
Glass in jam tart.
Cigarette end in loaf.
Cigarette stub in milk.
Beetle in packet of popcorn.
Beetle in canned fruit.
Beetle in tin of plums.
Fly in cream bun.
Mould in cream puff.
Mould in steak and kidney pie.
Mould in cheese spread.
Mould in sausage roll.
Metal in jar of pickles.
Grubs in nuts and raisins.
Unsound chicken.
Unsound meat pies.
Unfit birthday cake.
Unfit liver.
Infested broad beans.
Rancid butter.
Details of the action taken under the Food and Drugs Act, 1955 and the Food
Hygiene Regulations, 1955, appear on pages 53-55.
As provided for in Section 92(3) of the Food and Drugs Act, 1955, samples
may be submitted to the Public Analyst from a person not being an officer of a Food
and Drugs Authority. In accordance with the decision of the Southwark Borough
Council the Public Analyst, who is an Officer of that Council, and also the Public
Analyst for Islington, charges for samples submitted by private individuals for
analysis a minimum fee of £3 3s. Od. per sample.
