Public Health (London) Act, 1936—Section 95.
(1) Water supplies to tenement houses.
22 notices were served under this section requiring the provision of water
supplies to tenement houses.
29 water supplies were provided.
(2) 31 applications were received for water certificates, and 34 certificates which
included some in respect of applications received last year were issued in respect of
326 separate dwellings.
(b) Well Water.
As a result of the annual examination of known underground water supplies
in the borough, it was found that 19 of the 28 boreholes and wells continued to be
unused and were effectively sealed. 5 of the remaining wells were found to be out
of use.
During the year 20 samples of water were taken, 9 for chemical and 11 for
bacteriological examination. 4 of the bacteriological samples were unsatisfactory
and the chemical analyses indicated that the water could not be regarded as free
from pollution. The water from these wells, however, is used only for industrial
purposes.
(c) Water Samples—Miscellaneous.
One sample of sub-soil water was taken.
(d) Swimming Bath Water.
The number of samples of swimming bath water taken during the year is as
follows :—

SECTION D
HOUSING
(In conjunction with Mr. W. C. Bartlett, Chief Public Health Inspector.)
During the year under review a number of areas in the borough were
redeveloped and the erection of houses and flats proceeded. For some time to come
the numerous individual unfit houses and parts of houses will require attention and
appropriate repair, closure or demolition action to be taken. It is a fact that there
are still many thousands of underground rooms which do not come up to the requisite
standard.
Both the County and the Borough Councils have continued to clear areas of
unfit houses where possible and in this connection Orders were confirmed by the
Minister of Housing and Local Government during the year in relation to the
following areas :—
Metropolitan Borough of Islington, Dibden Street Clearance Area 5 houses.
Metropolitan Borough of Islington, Pickering Street Clearance Area 5 houses.
Metropolitan Borough of Islington, Pierrepont Row Clearance Area 6 houses.
In addition the following were represented under Part III of the Housing Act,
1957, for clearance, viz :
13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31 and 33 Provence Street.
