Certificates of Vaccination and Inoculation—Authentication—Ministry of Health
Circular 60/48.
Applications for authentication to be dealt with by the Medical Officer of
Health numbered 1,045 as against 645 for the previous year. The applications com'
prise requests for authentication of International Certificates of Vaccination and
Inoculation against smallpox, cholera, typhoid, etc., and this major increase, which
is now a substantial item for verification, arises presumably from the greatly increased
amount of foreign travel
Measles and Whooping Cough.
Measles and Whooping Cough became generally notifiable in London at the
end of 1939. Prior to this there was only a limited notification.
Measles.
The incidence of measles was lower in 1957 than for any of the post-war years,
with the exception of 1947 and 1954 but notwithstanding, the total number of
children affected was still quite substantial. Since there is no inoculation against this
infection the incidence of measles continues as a natural infection uncontrolled to a
high degree. In the absence of active control measures there appears to be no reason
why epidemic figures should not recur in any future year.

The following table shows the age-groups of the notified cases during 1957:—
