The course of the measles outbreak, which was one of the most extensive for
several years, is shown in the block chart which follows, from which it will be seen
that the number of cases began to rise materially in October, 1954. From then onwards
there was a regular increase to the end of the year, a relative drop in the early part
of 1955, and then again an increase, with a major peak in April, when over 800 cases
were notified. During the outbreak, which extended over some eleven months,
approximately 4,000 young children were notified as having contracted measles.
Only in the most exceptional circumstances were measles cases removed to hospital.
