The Public Health (Meat) (Amendment) Regulations, 1952, by virtue of which
horses, asses, mules, etc. are now included for the purpose of Part II of the
main Regulations, came into force, thus bringing the slaughter of these
animals into line with the slaughter of other animals for human consumption.
Notice of the slaughter of horses intended for human consumption
must now be given to the Local Authority with a view to their being
inspected.
The London County Council Byelaws for the Protection of Food made under
Section 15 of the Food and Drugs Act, 1938, received the approval of the
Ministry of Food, and came into force on 3rd November. Unlike the
previous Byelaws which have now been repealed, no exemption from Byelaw
requirements is given to the Metropolitan Cattle Market. Following
negotiations with the City Corporation, who own the Market, and representation
to the Ministry of Food, it was considered that there were no grounds
to perpetuate the exemption. The Council, however, has agreed with the
City Corporation the method by which the Byelaws should be enforced at
the market.
