could not be fully ascertained until the June routine treatment. The standard
treatment in June of this year showed a considerable decrease in the rat population
in the sewers situate in this particular area.
Water Supplies.
Main water supplies for premises in the Borough are the responsibility of the
Metropolitan Water Board. Samples were taken for chemical and bacteriological
examination, four of which were reported as unsatisfactory. This was due to dirty
storage conditions at the premises and in each case remedial action was taken which
resulted in the storage facilities being brought up to the required standard.
Thanks are due to the Metropolitan Water Board for its co-operation and wholehearted
assistance during the year.
Details of cases where a waste of water comes to the notice of this Department
are forwarded immediately to the Board and the necessary action taken.
The number of bore-holes and wells known to exist in the Borough is 28. 18 of
these have been abandoned and effectively sealed, leaving 10 capable of being used.
4 of which are temporarily out of commission. Samples of water for chemical and
bacteriological examinations have been taken from the 6 at present in use and the
results showed that no exceptions can be taken to their use for domestic or washing
purposes. In no case is the water used for dietetic purposes and the position in respect
of underground water in the Borough is therefore satisfactory.
In accordance with the requirements of Section 95 of the Public Health (London)
Act, 1936, 25 applications for water certificates were received and 25 certilicates
were issued in respect of 532 dwellings and one Laundry.
