Although there were 50 notifications of diphtheria, only 19 of these cases were
confirmed, which was two more than the number of confirmed cases in 1949. Only
one death was reported as being due to diphtheria, and this was in a child whose
immunisation had been started some time previously but not completed. There
was a minor outbreak of diphtheria, an event which is rather unusual since the
majority of children in the Borough have been inoculated. In one family, a grandmother,
57 years, mother, 35 years, and two of her children suffered from the same
type of diphtheria infection. The mother was very severely ill and the grandmother
severely ill, but fortunately all recovered. A third child, a contact of this family,
also contracted diphtheria of the same type.
Whooping Cough Prophylaxis.
Whooping cough is a distressing sickness, especially for young children, and it
is therefore natural for parents to seek to protect their children against it. The
results are not so assessable as in the case of diphtheria immunisation, nevertheless
some modification of the attack, if not complete avoidance, can be expected.
Whooping cough immunisation is carried out in the Local Health Authority
Clinics and by general practitioners. The Divisional Medical Officer has kindly
made available the following information in regard to Islington children:—
Whooping Cough Prophylaxis.
