In respect of housing, Islington presents a formidable problem due to the high
proportion of out-of-date housing in tenement occupation. The maintenance of
houses free from nuisance under the Public Health (London) Act, 1936, is becoming
increasingly difficult in a number of properties owing to the rising disparity between
the cost of repairs and rents received. The necessity to take action under Section 11
of the Housing Act creates difficult problems of rehousing.
I am again indebted to the loyalty and assistance of the senior officers and staff
of the Public Health Department during the year and for the consideration extended
by the Chairmen of the Public Health and Housing Committees, Councillor Mrs. F. H.
Cantwell, J.P., and Councillor D. McArthur Jackson, J.P., respectively.
V. FREEMAN,
Medical Officer of Health.
