DAILY GUARDIAN SERVICE.
In addition to the Day Nurseries, the Borough Council in co-operation with
the Ministry of Labour and National Service provided a Daily Guardian Service.
Briefly, this Service is the registration of suitable women for the care
in their own homes of one or more children belonging to women who wish to work or
are already working. These women are, in the first instance, recommended by the
Child Protection Visitor, and in each case a visit is paid by the Visitor to the home
of the prospective Daily Guardian. The women, if approved, become eligible for a
Government grant of 4/- per week in respect of each child they take into their care.
This provides for day-time care only, and the Daily Guardian must conform to the
rules and regulations of the scheme as laid down by the Borough Council which include
regular visits with the children to the appropriate voluntary welfare centre. The
scheme commenced on the 1st July 1942, and by the end of the year 97 women were
approved and registered as Daily Guardians providing for the care of 152 young
children under the age of 5 years. The voluntary welfare centres agreed to cooperate
with the Borough Council in the working of this scheme.
