During the year these Inspectors made 861 visits to factories (including factory
laundries and factory bakehouses), 1,180 visits to workshops (including workshop
laundries and workshop bakehouses), 1,650 visits to workplaces (other than outworkers'
premises) and restaurant kitchens, 1,433 visits to outworkers' premises,
and 4,611 miscellaneous re-inspections and calls.
Notices Served.—In consequence of the 897 sanitary defects discovered as
the result of the inspections above, 290 intimation and 10 statutory notices were
served. Of these notices, 61 were served on the owners of factories, 110 on the
owners of workshops and workplaces, 28 on the owners of bakehouses, and 95 on
the owners of restaurant kitchens. In addition to these nuisances, 45 were discovered
on Outworkers' premises, necessitating the service of 6 notices. All the
defects were remedied, but it was necessary in one instance to resort to legal proceedings.
Registers.—There were 2,777 workshops on the Registers as contrasted with
2,754 in 1936, while the total number of workrooms was 3,869 as compared with
3,872 in the previous year ; 97 workshops were added to the Registers, while 74
were removed from them.
