NATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
TO CHILDREN.
This Society has again demonstrated its usefulness during the year in dealing
with difficult conditions. 60 cases were visited by the Society's three Inspectors in
this area at the request of the Public Health Department. Supervision was continued
in 12 cases from the previous year and 4 were in co-operation with the Child Protection
Visitor.
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM AND OPHTHALMIA.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum is an inflammatory disease with purulent discharge
occurring in the eyes of infants within three weeks of birth.
34 cases of Ophthalmia Neonatorum were notified, compared with 45 cases
last year.
124 cases of Ophthalmia were reported by the London County Council and
Health Visitors as against 121 cases during the previous year.
14 out of the 34 cases of Ophthalmia Neonatorum were attended at birth by
midwives.
Of the 34 cases investigated, both eyes of the infant were affected in 24 instances,
whilst in 4 the right eye was involved, and in 6 the left.

Ophthalmia Nursing .—7 cases of inflammatory disease of infants' eyes were nursed by the North London Nursing Association for the Council at a cost of £15 13s. 9d. In 1936 18 cases were nursed at the cost of £27 14s. 9d.
