SCAVENGING.
Particulars are required in the Annual Report of any extension or improvement
during the year of methods of scavenging or refuse disposal, and a statement
as to the character and efficiency of the arrangements for the removal and disposal
of house refuse.
During the year the Medical Officer of Health visited, with the Cleansing
Superintendent, the dumping grounds where the contractors dispose of Islington
refuse.
Mr. Browning, the Cleansing Superintendent, has kindly supplied me with the
following statement regarding the work during the year:—
(1) Street Sweeping.—All wooden orderly trucks have been fitted with special
rubber tyres and ten metal orderly trucks purchased and put into service on main
roads.
(2) Gully Cleansing.—One 6-ton mechanical vehicle of 1,000 gallons' capacity
water tank for gully cleansing and fitted with special street washing apparatus,
purchased and put into commission in July last.
The old open type horse-drawn gully van taken out of service and a handpropelled
gully sludge truck (closed container type) substituted therefor to work in
conjunction with the mechanical gully emptiers.
