BACTERIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION IN CASES OF PUERPERAL
SEPSIS.
During the year no swab was submitted.
SPECIAL BACTERIOLOGICAL OR CHEMICAL EXAMINATIONS.
Most of the work under this heading was in connection with alleged food
poisoning, and the Ministry of Health Laboratory gave us very considerable help
by examining samples submitted to them. In addition, examinations were made
of specimens submitted by practitioners in cases of suspected Scarlet Fever
and Dysentery. Scarlet Fever (haemolytic streptococci) suspected, negative result.
1 dystentery, negative result. In regard to food poisoning, the samples were:
1 of tinned pineapple; 1 of tinned peas ; and 1 of ham.
VACCINATION.
No vaccination was performed by the Medical Officer of Health under the
Public Health (Smallpox Prevention) Regulations, 1917, as it was possible to refer
each case immediately to the Public Vaccinator of the district or institution.
Vaccinations.—Of the 3,747 births returned on the "Birth List Sheets"
in 1935, the returns of vaccination show that only 1,715 infants were successfully
vaccinated while 7 were found to be insusceptible. There were also 127 who died
unvaccinated and 1,226 statutory declarations of conscientious objection were
obtained by the parents or guardians; 63 vaccinations were postponed under
medical authority, 401 removed to districts the vaccination officers of which were
duly apprised, and 174 removed to other districts or places unknown, thus leaving
34 unaccounted for. The return of certificates of exemption, therefore, represents
32.7 per cent. of the 3,747 births above-mentioned.
