shown by the returns of the licencees and the 424 visits paid to them, moreover,
two of that number were allowed to lapse in October at the Annual Licensing by
the London County Council.
There is in addition one slaughterhouse (knacker's yard) where horses for
export only are killed; here, during the year, 1,558 were slaughtered. This also
is a reduction in number during recent years.
The quality of the animals killed in the Borough slaughterhouses is beyond
reproach; no part of any carcase was found unfit during the year. The diseased
internal organs (offal) were mainly parasitic livers, far too common in otherwise
healthy and young stock, due to grazing on badly drained pastures, where they are
reared prior to the feeding period.
Tables are appended showing the unsound and diseased food destroyed and
the number of visits to particular classes of shops.
At one butcher's shop 286 lbs. of beef, mutton and lamb were seized as being
unsound and unfit for human food. The meat was found in the refrigerator and
chopping room, and the defendant appeared at the Local Petty Sessions Court
where he was fined £5 5s. 0d. and £5 5s. 0d. costs.
A tinned foods dealer in the Caledonian Market was summoned for having in
his possession 62 lbs. of tinned food in a blown or otherwise unsound condition.
He was fined at the same Court £25 and £5 costs. A pig's carcase and also one
small pig's head were seized at the Caledonian Market, but owing to certain
extenuating circumstances no legal proceedings were taken.
SALE OF FOOD ORDER, 1921.
One prosecution was taken for exposing for sale imported meat not properly
labelled. The summons was dismissed on payment of £1 1s. 0d. costs.
PUBLIC HEALTH (MEAT) REGULATIONS, 1924.
No prosecutions for the year.
