HOUSES LET IN LODGINGS.
The hous.es which come under the operation of the bye-laws received 2,235
inspections during the year, followed by 4,220 subsequent re-inspections and calls,
so that the total visits amounted to 6,455.
These inspections resulted in 869 intimations being served on the persons
responsible, which were followed by 150 statutory notices to demand the abatement
of the nuisances discovered by the Inspectors especially engaged upon this work.
15 summonses were issued for non-compliance with Statutory Notices. In 3 cases
Orders were made for the work to be done in specified periods. In 9 cases fines
were inflicted. The amount of fines and costs in these cases totalled:—Fines,
£28 18s. 0d., and costs, £26 0s. 0d. One summons was issued for illegally letting
an underground room as a dwelling and the defendant was fined £1 1s. 0d.
Altogether 3,812 improvements were effected in 892 premises.
