REPORT ON THE WORK OF THE DAY NURSERIES RECEIVING
GRANTS FROM THE BOROUGH COUNCIL..
There are three Day Nurseries in the Borough.

As regards the Lower Holloway Day Nursery children are received from one
month to five years of age where the mothers are at work. The Nursery is open
from 7.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. (Saturdays to 1.30 p.m.). On arrival, the children
are bathed, teeth cleaned, heads examined, and dressed in Nursery clothes. The
fees charged are 1/- daily. Unmarried mothers or necessitous cases 10d. Halfdays
8d. or 6d. There is a Nursery School for twenty children under a trained
voluntary teacher. Two students from the Norland Institute attend daily for
practical training. The staff consists of a Matron, a Sister and four probationers,
a non-resident cook and a cleaner.
The South Islington Pro Patria Day Nursery is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
(Saturdays to 1 p.m.), and the charges are 10d. per day and 5d. per half-day.
The staff consists of a Matron, a Sister, a Nursery Teacher, nine probationers, a
cook and housemaids.
The St. Luke's Day Nursery is open from 7.45 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. on weekdays,
but is closed on Saturdays and Bank Holidays. The average charge is 1/- per
day, but no child is turned away if the circumstances are poor. The staff consists of a
Matron, a Sister, a Staff-nurse, two probationers, two students, a cook, a charwoman,
and an odd man.
It might be remarked in connection with this Day Nursery, which is beautifully
situated, that it is generally possible to secure a vacancy. At the other Day
Nurseries the accommodation is very pressed, and there are waiting lists.
There is a possibility of the opening of a " Guest House " in connection with
this Day Nursery next year, which will enhance the value of the services of this
institution to the community, the payment being moderate.
