69 [1931
CENSUS OF 1931.—DWELLINGS.
(1) Private families, classified by 'size of family, rooms occupied, and density of
occupation, and (2) Table of Dwellings, Rooms and Families.
In respect of room accommodation, Islington had a general average of C.41
rooms per dwelling. Housing pressure as measured by the proportion of families
to dwellings, was greatest in St. Pancras, where the average was 2.28 families to
each dwelling, and where only 18.4 per cent, of the families were in undivided
occupation of separate dwellings. Islington and Paddington were the only
Boroughs with averages of more than 2 families per dwelling. In these two
Boroughs, however, houses are larger and the families smaller than in the country
generally, the combination of these factors improving their relative positions as
expressed by the persons per room ratio. In each Borough without exception the
family is smaller than it was ten years ago. As compared with 1911 the density
figure with the exception of one Borough shows an improvement, but this applies
to the country as a w hole; the change is largely a consequence of the reduction in
the size of families and is incomplete as a general index to housing conditions.
