HOUSES LET IN LODGINGS.
The houses which come under the operation of the bye-laws received 986
inspections during the year, followed by 5,363 subsequent re-inspections and calls,
so that the total visits amounted to 6,349.
These inspections resulted in 590 intimations being served on the persons
responsible, which were followed by 113 statutory notices to demand the abatement
of the nuisances discovered by the Inspectors especially engaged upon this work.
13 summonses were issued for non-compliance with Statutory Notices. In 7 cases
Orders were made for the work to be done in specified periods. In 5 cases fines
were inflicted and in one case the summons was withdrawn as the nuisance had
been abated. The amount of fines and costs in these cases totalled:—Fines,
£28 2s. 0d., and costs, £20 9s. 0d. One summons was issued for illegally letting
an underground room as a dwelling and the defendant was fined £1 1s. 0d.
Altogether 2,743 improvements were effected in 567 premises.
