The amount paid during the year by the London County Council for the baths
given to the children was £511 19s. 0d.
Proceedings were instituted by the London County Council under Section 122
of the Children Act, 1908, in 90 instances during the year. Of this number 36
parents were fined, when penalties ranging from 1s. to 10s. were inflicted. The
total fines received amounted to £16 3s. 6d.
FACTORY AND WORKSHOP ADMINISTRATION.
The Medical Officer of Health submits the annual report on the manner in
which the provisions of the Factory and Workshops Acts, 1901, were carried out
in his district during the year 1931.
Inspections and Visits.—The inspections and visits made by the three
Inspectors were as under :—
Factories, including Factory Laundries 796
Workshops, including Workshop Laundries 820
Workplaces, other than outworkers' homes 1,365

Notices Served —In consequence of the 1,268 sanitary defects discovered
as the result of the inspections above, 303 intimation and 15 statutory notices
were served. Of these notices 94 were served on the owners of factories, 127 on
the owners of the workshops and workplaces, and 25 on the owners of bakehouses
and 48 of restaurant kitchens. In addition to these nuisances, 73 were discovered
on Outworkers' premises, necessitating the service of 9 notices. Most of these
defects were remedied and it was not found necessary to resort to legal proceedings
Registers.—There were 2,598 workshops on the Registers as contrasted
with 2,552 in 1930, while the total number of workrooms were 3,674, as compared
with 3,58-8 in the previous year; 129 workshops were added to the Registers, while
81 were removed from it.
