Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Upper Street, N.I.
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit the Annual Report on the Health and Sanitary
Condition of the Borough for the year 1931.
This is a census year, and information gleaned from the Census Reports as
published has been used, especially in the housing section of the report. The
change in density (room occupation) is largely a consequence of the reductions in
the size of families.
The death-rate for the year was 12.0 per 1,000 inhabitants, as against 12.1 in
the previous year.
The infantile mortality rate was 04, the rate for the previous year being 70.
Smallpox, although it continued during the year, did not reach the same
height of 1930, there being 66 cases, as against 244 in 1930.
I desire to thank the Chairmen and the Members of the Council and Committees
for the keen interest taken in the work of the department; and the
Superintendent and members of my staff generally for their ready help in all the
work.
Your obedient servant,
Medical Officer of Health,
