All of the 41 cases were treated in Hospitals. 23 of these contracted the
disease in Hospital; 11 cases were removed to London County Council Hospitals;
and 30 cases were removed to the St. Mary's Islington Hospital and other London
Hospitals.
Deaths.— 7 deaths were registered as being due to Puerperal Fever.
PUERPERAL PYREXIA.
Notification of Puerperal Pyrexia Regulations, 1926.—There were 67 cases
notified, as against 89 last year. Of these, 19 were Private Medical Practitioners'
cases; 44 occurred in Hospital, while 4 were certified Midwives' cases. The
notifications were in the proportion of 12.7 per 1,000 births.

There was no call during the year for the services of the Consultant.
PEMPHIGUS NEONATORUM.
During the year 1931, 3 cases which came to the knowledge of the Medical
Officer of Health were investigated.
THE MILK SCHEME FOR NECESSITOUS EXPECTANT AND NURSING
MOTHERS AND CHILDREN UNDER FIVE YEARS OF AGE.
During the year 1931, the sum expended in the provision of fresh and dried
milk for necessitous, expectant and nursing mothers, and children under five years
of age, amounted to £2,934 7s. Id., as against £1,945 0s. 1½d. in 1930. The
total amount expended since the Order came into operation in 1918 is
£56,025 15s. 10d.
The total recipients during the year numbered 10,481, and the quantity of milk
supplied to them was equal to 240,448 pints (30,056 gallons).
DISTRIBUTION OF MILK TO NECESSITOUS MOTHERS AND
CHILDREN.
A modified Scale of income was adopted by the Council 26th July, 1929
(subject to approval of Ministry of Health), and operating from 1st August, 1929,
as follows :—
Per head.
6/- a week and under, after allowance for rent, Free.
6/1 to 7/5 a week, after allowance for rent, Quarter cost.
7/6 to 8/- a week, after allowance for rent, Half cost.
Children living at home and earning, not to be counted as members of the
family for the purposes of the scale.
Discretionary power given to the Milk Sub-Committee to deal with applications
for milk where the gross family income is £3 a week or more.
