There was a decrease of 122 deaths in the number of deaths under 5 years of
age when compared with the average deaths at those ages during the preceding
ten years; whilst the number of registered deaths at the several age periods up
to between 5-55 years, were also below the decennial average.
The deaths of aged people between the age period 65 years and upwards
showed a decrease of 389 in the number of deaths when contrasted with the
previous year 1929, and were 6 above the ten years' average (1920-29).
INFANTILE MORTALITY.
Infant Deaths, 399 , Mortality Rate, 70—The deaths of 399 infants
under twelve months' old were registered during the year, or 77 below the
decennial average (476), and they were equal to the infantile rate of 70 per 1,000
births. The lowest rate on record, however, is 53 per thousand births in the year
1927. The rate was 1 per 1,000 births above the mean annual record of the
preceding ten years, and is 3 per 1,000 below the rate of last year (1929).
In the quarters the mortality ranged from 82 per 1,000 births in the first
quarter, 89 in the second, 58 in the third, and 66 in the fourth.
