connected with such houses and the sanitary defects in such area is an
improvement scheme for the re-arrangement and the re-construction of the
streets and houses within such area or of some such streets or houses.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
G. CLARK TROTTER,
Medical Officer of Health,
Metropolitan Borough of Islington.
The Clerk,
London County Council.
METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF ISLINGTON.
Public Health Department,
Municipal Buildings,
Upper Street, N. 1.
4th April, 1929.
Georges Road, Hope Street, Eden Grove, and that part of
Eden Grove, formerly known as Grove Street.
These premises are comprised in an area which may conveniently be
considered in two sections, one the extremely narrow, irregularly shaped strip
on the south side of Georges Road, and a rectangular area bounded on the
south by Georges Road, on the east by Hope Street, on the north by Eden
Grove and on the west by that part now called Eden Grove which formerly
was termed Grove Street.
The premises comprised in the area have, since 1919, been the subject of
representations by the late Dr. A. E. Harris to the Islington Borough Council
in respect of their serious condition, only seven houses in Eden Grove facing
north not having previously been represented.
The conditions have progressively become worse with the lapse of time
and the further deterioration of the properties.
Much of the information supplied in support of my representation of the
Georges Road Area which was brought to the notice of the London County
Council on the 31st August, 1923, applies also to this new represented area.
The Housing Committee of the Islington Borough Council on the 7th June,
1923, when considering the former scheme, had before them the conditions of
this present area, and were then strongly of opinion that the narrow area in
Georges Road called for prior consideration. At that time, however, it was
more convenient to take the other area represented along with the Brand
Street Area as a scheme. The condition of the properties meanwhile, as
stated, has not improved but has become gradually worse.
The site on which these houses stand has a total area of about 56,380
square feet, or approximately 1.29 acres. The total number of inhabited
houses is 69, and the population 526. The area in the separate divisions is as
follows:—
Georges Road Section 21,380 square feet.
Eden Grove, Hope Street Section 35,000 square feet.
