HOUSES LET IN LODGINGS.
The 1,006 houses which come under the operation of the bye-laws received
669 inspections during the year, followed by 3,138 subsequent re-inspections and
calls, so that the total visits amounted to 3,807.
These inspections resulted in 402 intimations being served on the persons
responsible, which were followed by 56 statutory notices to demand the abatement
of the nuisances discovered by the Inspector especially engaged upon this work.
Two prosecutions for non-compliance with the notices served were instituted, and
an order was made by the magistrate for the necessary work to be done with
payment of £1 1s. costs.
Altogether 1,951 improvements were effected in 406 premises.
We have had now for some years a vacancy in this specialised department,
the work being done by one Inspector, where formerly there were two.
