These figures, of course, represent only the number of cases which have
been dealt with officially. The number encountered was numerous, but in view
of the difficulties of finding other accommodation, proceedings were not instituted
in the majority of cases met with.
HOUSING RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC HEALTH
DEPARTMENT.
During the year 1928 representations were made to the London County
Council regarding housing accommodation for "special hardship" cases. These
were cases in which there was gross overcrowding, and in all 158 were so recommended
for special consideration. In addition to these recommendations letters
were written on behalf of 16 other families who were considered to deserve consideration,
owing to illness or other causes, for any spare accommodation after
the "special hardship" quota had been dealt with. Thus in all 174 cases
were written about to the Housing or Public Health Departments of the London
County Council.
In addition to above 58 special investigations were made, but as these did not
come within the definition of "special hardship" they were not recommended.
