SCAVENGING.
Scavenging.—The expenditure from the rates could be materially
reduced if individual householders would themselves destroy, instead of putting
into the bin, much material, which they could readily do. There has been a
Ministry of Health investigation into the whole of the methods of Disposal of
Refuse in the London Area, and as a result of the report, possibly in the near
future pressure will be brought to bear upon the Metropolitan Boroughs and
adjacent authorities with the object of having established an "ad hoc" authority
to deal with the whole of the scavenging to secure both general efficiency and
economy. The short summary here given is derived from the "Dawes" report,
and although the information is only up to the year 1926, it gives Islington
information (which in the report is compared with other boroughs), and is the
only information generally available.
