Notices Served.—In consequence of the 1,157 sanitary defects discovered
as the result of the inspections above, 259 intimations and 20 statutory notices
were served. Of these notices 88 were served on the owners of factories, 121
on the owners of the workshops and workplaces, and 11 on the owners of bakehouses
and 34 of restaurant kitchens. In addition to these nuisances, 137 were
discovered on Outworkers' premises, necessitating the service of 25 notices.
Most of these defects were remedied and it was only found necessary in one
instance to resort to legal proceedings. In this case the defendant asked for an
adjournment to carry out the work, and the summons was subsequently withdrawn,
but he was ordered by the Magistrate to pay £2 2s. cost to the Council.
Registers.—There were 2,469 workshops on the Registers, as contrasted
with 2,367 in 1927, while the total number of workrooms were 3,446, as compared
with 3,291 in the previous year; 178 workshops were added to the Registers, while
76 were removed from it.
