at one time and not a hearse at another. The matter is one which seems to be worthy
of public attention for legislation to compel hearses only to be used as such, or the
notification of the use of such a conveyance otherwise to the Local Authority so
that the disinfection might be properly supervised.
INQUESTS AND MORTUARY.
During the year 274 bodies were received into the Mortuary, as compared
with an average of 335 in the preceding 10 years.
Only five infectious bodies were received during the year.
The daily average number of bodies received was 0.7; whilst in 1927 the
average was 0.8.

In 206 cases inquests were held, as contrasted with an average of 303 in the ten years 1918-27.

PREVENTION OF INFECTION.
Notification, Isolation, Fatality, of Specified Diseases under the
Provisions of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891.
The Principal Diseases Include:
Small Pox, Diphtheria, Scarlet Fever, Enteric Fever, Typhus Fever,
Puerperal Fever and Erysipelas.
2,260 cases of the principal diseases which are notifiable under the Public
Health (London) Act, 1891, came to the knowledge of the Medical Officer of
Health. This number does not include other communicable ailments, which are
also notifiable. The complete list of infectious diseases which are notifiable in
