SEPTIC DISEASES.
Erysipelas and Puerperal Septicaemia are the principal diseases of this class.
Erysipelas. 14 deaths were returned from this disease, or 4 more than in
the year 1927, and 5 above the average of the preceding ten years 1918-27.
Puerperal Diseases.—These comprise Puerperal Pyæmia, Septicæmia,
Septic Intoxication and Puerperal Fever, and they caused 9 deaths, being 3 below
the return of 1927 and equalled the average of the ten years 1918-27. The deathrate
was equal to 1.05 per 1,000 births.
CANCER.
Cancer.—518 deaths were registered from this malignant disease during the
year compared with 449 in 1927, and with an average of 451 in the previous
decennium. The deaths represent a death-rate of 1.59 per 1,000 of the civil
population and is 0.21 above the average rate (1.38) of the last ten years; 229
deaths occurred among males and 289 among females. The following statement
shows the ages at death of the persons attacked during the past ten years, and the
return for the year 1928:—

TUBERCULOSIS.
Tuberculosis caused 358 deaths, which were 171 below the average of the
last decennium, but were 10 above the number registered in 1927. The deathrate
resulting from them was equal to 1.10 per 1,000 of the civil population, and
represented 8.6 per cent. of the deaths from all causes during the year.
Tuberculosis of the Respiratory System (Phthisis or Pulmonary
Tuberculosis), caused 309 deaths, as contrasted with the decennial average
of 365, while the death-rate was 0.95 per 1,000 of the civil population as against
