AGES AT DEATH.
The following statement gives the ages at which persons died in the Borough, and contrasts them with the returns for the preceding ten years:—

There was a decrease of 158 deaths in the number of deaths under 5 years of
age when compared with the average deaths at those ages during the preceding
ten years; whilst the number of registered deaths at the several age periods up
to between 45-55 years, were also below the decennial average.
The deaths of aged people between the age period 65 years and upwards
showed a decline of 53 in the number of deaths when contrasted with the previous
year 1927, but were 123 above the ten years' average (1918-27).
INFANTILE MORTALITY.
Infant Deaths, 374; Mortality Rate, 64.—The deaths of 874 infants
under twelve months' old were registered during the year, or 134 below the
decennial average (508), and they were equal to the infantile rate of 64 per 1,000
births. The lowest rate on record, however, is 53 per thousand births in the year
1927. The rate was 9 per 1,000 births below the mean annual record of the
pieceding ten years, and is 11 per 1,000 above the rate of last year (1927).
In the quarters the mortality ranged from 82 per 1,000 births in the first
quarter, 51 in the second, 49 in the third, and 76 in the fourth.

In London the infantile mortality was 67 per 1,000 births, while in the six
boroughs encircling Islington it was 73.
I he rate for England and Wales was 65 per 1,000 births.
