These figures, of course, represent only the number of cases which have
been dealt with officially. The number encountered was numerous, but in view
of the difficulties of finding other accommodation, proceedings were not instituted
in the majority of cases met with.
HOUSING RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC HEALTH
DEPARTMENT.
During the year 1927 representations were made to the London County
Council regarding housing accommodation for "special hardship" cases. These
were cases in which there was gross overcrowding, and in all 30 were so recommended
for special consideration. In addition to these recommendations letters
were written on behalf of 21 other families who were considered to deserve consideration,
owing to illness or other causes, for any spare accommodation after
the "special hardship" quota had been dealt with. Thus in all 51 cases
were written about to the Housing or Public Health Departments of the London
County Council.
DEMOLITION OF HABITABLE DWELLINGS.
In section 6 of the Housing (Additional Powers) Act of 1919 power was given
to prevent houses being converted into business premises. The section, however,
was repealed by the Housing Act of 1925. During the year 1927 1 consider it
would probably be under-estimated if we were to put the number of families thus
de-housed, and compelled to find accommodation elsewhere, at about 72 families.
