Examination of the infant deaths of 1960 shows that four deaths occurred in the first
week of life, one due to external hydrocephalus, one to congenital heart disease, and
two to prematurity.
Of the ten children dying between the age of one and three months, three had congenital
heart disease.
All but three of the sixteen infant deaths were caused by, or associated with prematurity
or severe congenital abnormality.
In the case of ten of the infants the home addresses were outside England and Wales.
