Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act, 1926.
This Act provides for the grading and marking of agricultural produce and gives power
to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries by regulations to prescribe " designations "
and " marks " to indicate the quality of such produce.
The Regulations made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries under the above
Act were enumerated in the Annual Report for 1931.
London County Council (General Powers) Act, 1932.
Registration of Food Premises.
This Act received the Royal Assent and came into operation on the 12th
July, 1932.
Part II (Public Health) contains provisions empowering the London County
Council to make By-laws for promoting sanitary and cleanly conditions in the
manufacture, storage, preparation, transport or exposure for sale of any article to
be sold for food.
In addition, this Part of the Act (Section 5) requires the registration with the
sanitary authority of premises used for the preparation or manufacture of sausages
or potted, pressed, pickled or preserved meat, fish or other food intended for sale.
Power is given to the sanitary authority to refuse to register, or to remove from
the register, any premises that are unsuitable; a person aggrieved by such action
has a right of appeal to a Court of Summary Jurisdiction. The requirement to
register does not apply to premises used as a club, hotel or restaurant.
At the date of the preparation of this report the following premises were

registered in accordance with the requirements of the Act:—

Sausages14
Preserved meat13
Pickled meat5

All the premises concerned were carefully inspected prior to registration and
in 12 cases improvements were required before the registration was effected. The
improvements included repair or alteration of sanitary arrangements, cleansing of
premises and the provision of suitable and adequate facilities for persons engaged
in the business to wash their hands.
Section 5 of the Act also extends the powers of sanitary authorities in
connection with the registration of ice cream premises (see page 31). Other
provisions of this part of the Act (Part II) relate to the notification of Food
Poisoning (see below) and Unsound Food (see page 34).
Notification of Food Poisoning.
This Act requires medical practitioners to notify all cases of food poisoning
occurring in their practice.
This early information of such cases will enable prompt measures to be taken
for dealing with any suspected source of infection. Information of all cases in
the County of London is distributed to Medical Officers of Health by the London
County Council.
Up to the end of the year I received 11 notifications of food poisoning in
Holborn.Enquiries were made in each case, but no special action was called for.
453 cases were notified in London from the coming into force of the Act to
he end of the year,
