marked improvement during the same period, and this is due to
the great improvements in treatment. Whilst it is still
difficult to obtain a cure of the disease - and freedom from
symptoms and signs for a period of five years is not necessarily
the best criterion - patients either do not die from tuberculosis
or only die at a much later date.
Below is given a table of the notifications of and
deaths from tuberculosis in Hampstead for the past 4l years.
Prom 1918 to 1950 inclusive the figures are given as the yearly
averages, and from 1951 to 1958 the actual figures for those
years. Whilst the deaths in 1958 were higher than for the
previous two years as might happen by chance with such small
numbers, the trend is well marked.
