The number of underground bakehouses has steadily
diminished throughout the years. For instance, prior to the
Factory and Workshop Act, 1901, there were no less than 40
such premises operating in the Borough. These were reduced
to 22 after the passing of the 1901 Act and after April, 1959
there will remain only 2 underground bakehouses in the Borough
of Hampstead.
