The sanitary work in the foregoing tables includes drainage and
plumbing work for which approval is obtained from the Borough
Council.
727 drainage application forms and plans were submitted during
the year. 93 of these were for work carried out under notice, and
634 were for alterations and additions carried out voluntarily by the
owners.
There is a growing tendency for persons of all classes to make
their homes in suites of rooms, a tendency brought about by the need
for economy and efficiency.
The result is that additional sanitary fittings are required and
amendments to drains have to be made to provide the necessary
sanitary amenities.
The interference with existing sanitary systems that these alterations
involve requires constant oversight by the Sanitary Inspectors to
maintain a standard of work that ensures safety to the occupiers of
the rooms.
