(c) Deaths:
Deaths registered during the year numbered 2,467. From this figure must be
deducted 873 in respect of non-residents tranferred to their home towns. To
counter-balance this must be added a total of 846 residents of the Borough
who died in other parts of England. This gives the corrected figure of deaths
as 2,440 comprising 1,191 males and 1,249 females. Of the outward transferable
deaths, 862 occured in hospitals within the Borough.

(d) Infant Mortality
The number of deaths of infants under one year of age during the year was
64, giving a mortality rate per 1,000 live births of 21. This represents a
disturbing 29% increase over the 1967 figure of 16.3.
