The Domicilary Service provided for those aged or physically handicapped persons who are unable, by reason of senility, chronic sickness, or
similar, to attend the Foot Clinics, has more than proved justified. It has
enabled the physically handicapped and infirm to get about at home in
reasonable comfort, and do things for themselves, and so retain the independence essential to their mental and physical wellbeing.
Since 1959 the Chiropody Service has expanded and the statistics show
that treatments have increased in numbers. The interval between treatments
has, however, had to be prolonged. With the ageing population this is expected and shows the service is inadequate to meet the demands.
Little has been done over the years to increase efficiency of the service, or to increase productivity by taking steps to ensure that the time
of professional people is not spent on work that can be performed by ancillary staff, as the Chief Chiropodist, who has such a large and extended
establishment, has little or no clerical assistance.
More attention should be given to the curative and preventive aspects
of foot care which the Chiropodists of today are trained to undertake.
Such a change of emphasis would greatly improve the quality of the service
available to the community.
