cause.
Some sweets submitted with a complaint that they caused a member of
the public to suffer prolonged sleep were eaten by 3 members of the staff
without any ill effect and, in view of the fact that they are made in
batches of over 1 cwt., it was thought unlikely that only one member of the
public would be affected if they contained a soporific."
MEDICINAL BATHS AND TREATMENT CENTRE
General
There has been no change of note in the demand for work in these sections,
apart from the possibly somewhat unusual use of the sterilisation
unit to assist feminine fashion.
Certain interior modifications and improvements followed by redecoration
have considerably enhanced working conditions in these sections.
The usual quota of medical students and nurses has been received during
the year. They are given a very thorough insight into all aspects of
our varied work and great interest is invariably shown.
Cleansing and Treatment of Persons

In all 790 individuals received 1230 treatments for a variety of causes, the main items being:-

Head lice103 patients121 treatments
Pubic lice80 patients140 treatments
Body lice108 patients130 treatments
Scabies468 patients795 treatments

Of the treatments for body lice more than 50% were in respect of men
from a large hostel in the Borough. Work was carried out on behalf of
other London Boroughs in respect of 361 patients who received 604 treatments
.
Steam and Chemical Sterilisation
Requests for this service have remained reasonably static with one
exception. A total of 385 collections in respect of 9736 articles were
made. The increase of 1807 articles sterilised over the previous year was
mainly in respect of 19 collections from a hairdressing establishment, when
1558 hair wigs were sterilised. Assistance was again rendered to neighbouring
London Boroughs, 17 requests resulted in 1014 articles being sterilised.
Disinfestation
The following table indicates the variety of work undertaken in this
section. There was a slight increase in demand under most hea± but nothing
of any particular note:-
