Slum Clearance Programme
During 1968, 338 inspections were made where houses were surveyed or
examined in detail and 22 houses in 1 clearance area were represented as being
unfit for human habitation.
2 Compulsory Purchase Orders were made during the year involving 12 unfit
properties.
In addition, 2 areas involving 36 unfit houses were referred back for
action under Part II of the Housing Act 1957, i.e. where each unfit property
would be dealt with individually.
Partly as a result of clearance area action, and partly due to acquisition
by agreement, during the year 162 dwellings which had formed part of the
current or previous slum clearance programmes, were demolished.
In all 549 persons displaced under this heading were rehoused.
Improvement Areas
The Improvement Area at Old Oak Lane comprising 49 houses declared in
November 1967, was brought forward during 1968 by the service of appropriate
improvement notices, and the owners have proceeded with obtaining estimates,
applying for improvement grants, and in some cases putting works in hand.
There is every indication that in those cases where the tenants have consented
the works required will be started within the twelve months allowed under the
notices.
A further area of 70 houses (108 dwellings) was surveyed as a possible
improvement area early in the year, but the publication of the White Paper
"Old Houses into New Homes" with its projected changes in legislation
caused consideration of further improvement areas to be deferred until the
new legislation is available and policy determined.
