(a) Population:
Once again the Registrar-General's estimated population figure shows
a decrease, the figure for 1968 of 197,590 being 14,130 less than the previous
year. This unusually large loss might be attributed to the movement cutside
the Borough of families rehoused from the various development areas.
The following figures in age groups are estimates only:-
Under 1 year | 3,650 |
1 - 4 years | 12,850 |
5-14 years | 20,800 |
15 - 64 years | 134,590 |
65 years + | 25,700 |

(b) Births:
The corrected number of births was 1,806 males, 1,744 females giving
a total of 3,550 compared with 3,992 in 1967. This gives an annual rate of
18.0 per thousand of the population. The actual decrease in numbers of 442
comprised 384 legitimate and 58 illegitimate births.
(c) Deaths:
Deaths registered during the year numbered 2,389. From this figure must
be deducted 886 in respect of non-residents transferred to their home towns.
To counter-balance this must be added a total of 882 residents of the Borough
who died in other parts of England. This gives the corrected figure of deaths
as 2,405 comprising 1,252 males and 1,153 females.
