Miss B.J. Brace resigned her appointment as Dental Auxiliary and was
replaced by Miss J. Bowling who is to be congratulated on becoming Mrs.
Lewis. Miss. Highley and Mrs. Bowden resigned their positions as Dental
Surgery Assistants and were replaced by Miss Rosenquist and Miss Croskery.
Premises & Equipment
The five dental centres in the Borough, i.e. Bagley's Lane, Parsons
Green, St. Dunstan's, Shepherds Bush Road, and Westway have continued in
operation during the year, supplemented by the use of one of the Inner
London Education Authority's mobile surgeries. All surgeries are now
equipped to a high standard but the development of the service to meet
its statutory duty is now severely limited by an acute shortage of surgery
accommodation.
The need to keep treatment demands reasonably within the limits of
being able to provide that necessary, on at least an annual basis means
that little more than 50% of the school roll can be inspected annually.
The provision of new and additional surgeries is a matter of the utmost
urgency.
Postgraduate Studies
The importance of Public Health in the future development of the
Dental Services in this country, and in the prevention of dental disease
was recognised by The Royal College of Surgeons of England by the institution
of a new Diploma in Dental Public Health. The Principal School Dental
Officer has been given part-time leave of absence to attend the first
course for this diploma which commenced in October.
The Principal School Dental Officer attended the Annual Conference
of the British Dental Association at Brighton and also the course in
Child Dental Health at the London Hospital held under the auspices of
the British Postgraduate Medical Federation.
Mr. Y.S. Pradham also attended the Annual Conference of the British
Dental Association.
In conclusion, I should like to thank the Dental Officers, Dental
Surgery Assistant and Clerical Assistants for their continued support
and effort throughout the year. Thanks are also due to the Head Teachers
of the primary schools for their understanding and co-operation in the
efforts to further the aims of child dental health in Hammersmith.
Finally, I should like to express my gratitude to both the Inner
London Education Authority and the London Borough of Hammersmith for
allowing me the facility to attend the Diploma in Dental Public Health
Course.
