Atmospheric Pollution
The stations set up in the Borough at the Town Hall and Hythe Road for measuring
and recording the extent of the atmospheric pollution continued to function
during the year. In November automatic apparatus, which runs continuously for
eight days without attention, was installed at the Hythe Road station. At the time
of installation it was the only apparatus of its kind in regular use in the Metropolitan
area and is a great improvement on the standard apparatus in general use throughout
the country. During the London Smog, which occurred in the first week of
December, the stations proved very useful in recording the extent of the pollution
in the atmosphere from smoke and sulphur dioxide. The recordings for that period
are set out in the following tables:—

London " Smog"—Smoke and Sulphur Dioxide Concentration.

It can clearly be seen how the concentration of smoke and sulphur dioxide in
the atmosphere increases rapidly during a heavy smog.
Inter-Borough Smoke Control Liaison Committee
This Committee continued to meet during the year and many interesting discussions
took place to the mutual benefit of all the participating local authorities. Good
progress was reported in the establishment of Smoke Control Areas during the year.
